Procedures Flashcards
gastronomy
a procedure where an incision (-otomy) is made to the stomach (gastro-)
(typically for a gastric biopsy or to remove a foreign object)
cystotomy
a procedure where an incision (-otomy) is made to the bladder (cysto-)
(usually to remove urinary calculi or obtain balder wall biopsies)
celiotomy
a procedure where an incision (-otomy) is made through the abdominal wall (celio-)
(usually through the midline, also called a laparotomy but that starts through the flank)
ovariohysterectomy
a procedure in which the ovaries (ovario-) and uterus (hyster-) are surgically removed (-ectomy)
(a spay, prevents pregnancy, cycling, and pyometra)
femoral head and neck ostectomy
a procedure in which the head and neck of the femur (femoral) bone (osteo-) are removed (-ectomy)
(commonly called a FHO, used to palliate dogs with hip dysplasia)
tracheostomy
a procedure in which a permanent opening (-stomy) is made through the neck into the trachea (tracheo-)
gastrostomy
a procedure where a temporary new opening (-stomy) is formed when a tube is placed through the body wall into the stomach (gastro-)
(typically to feed patients that are anorexic or cannot tolerate oral feeding)
urethrostomy
a procedure where a new permanent opening (-stomy) is made in the urethra (urethro-) that connects to the body wall
hip arthroplasty
a surgical procedure that involves the replacement (-plasty) of a hip joint (arthro-) with a prosthetic implant
cheiloplasty
a procedure that involves the surgical repair/replacement (-plasty) of the lip (cheilo-)
vulvoplasty
a procedure that surgically changes the shape (-plasty) of the vulva (vulvo-)
(corrects an underdeveloped, damaged, or recessed vulva)
gastropexy
a procedure that adheres (-pexy) the stomach (gastro-) to the abdominal wall
(prevents gastric dilatation-volvulus (GDV))
laparoscopy
a procedure in which an optical instrument (laparoscope) is used to visualize (-scopy) the abdominal organs (laparo-) in a minimally invasive manner
herniorrhaphy
a surgical procedure to repair (-rrhaphy) a hernia (hernio-)
cystorrhaphy
a surgical repair of (-rrhaphy) a tear in the bladder wall (cysto-)
abdominoscentesis
the puncture (-centesis) of the abdominal cavity (abdomino-) using a small trocar or needle
(typically to aspirate free abdominal fluid, effusion)
thoracocentesis
puncture (-centesis) of the thoracic cavity (thoraco-) to aspirate free fluid or air
(frequently treats a pneumothorax, a condition in which free air accumulates in the thorax and compresses the lungs, causing respiratory difficulty)
