What is the strange situation designed to measure?
The security of attachment a child displays towards a caregiver
Where does a strange situation take place?
In a room with quite controlled conditions (eg-lab) with a two way mirror through which psychologists can observe the infants behaviour
What behaviours are used to judge attachment?

What’s proximity seeking?
An infant with a good attachment will stay fairy close to the caregiver
What’s exploration and secure-base behaviour?
Good attachment enables a child to feel confident to explore, using their caregiver as a secure base (eg point of contact that will make them feel safe)
What’s stranger anxiety?
One of the signs of becoming closely attached is a display of anxiety when a stranger approaches.
What’s separations anxiety?
Another sign of becoming attached is to protest at separation from the caregiver
What’s the response to reunion?
With the care giver after separation for a short period of time under controlled conditions
