problems with defining globalisation Flashcards
1
Q
It is not a universally positive process- it actually exacerbates inequalities across the world
A
- it creates marginalisation
- e.g. people are excluded from technology those who do not follow western values are excluded, western capitalism exploits developing countries workforce, people have to live in poluted areas (smog in beijing)
2
Q
It does not occur everywhere at the same time
A
- it is not occuring in some parts of the world and are developing slower
- the developing world is behind the western world
- poverty in brazil- there are still primitive cultyrrs untouched by globalisation e.g. 2020 Africa had 47% internet users
3
Q
it does not always lead to ‘cultural homogenisation’ where one global culture is created
A
- Much evidence that it creates divisions and conflicts e.g. different value systems which are incompatible coming into contact, foreign intervention causes conflicts, domestic racism
4
Q
It will not always lead to liberal, democratic values such as individualism, diversity and choice. Many across the world will actually resist this
A
- There is evidence that we are witnessing a backlash against these ideas
- e.g. resistance of nationalism, anti-globalism
