Local artisans, craftsmen and merchants could compete and local markets shut as a result; with many losing their livelihoods.
What economic development did colonies get that weren’t white settler colonies?
There was little economic development under 19th century colonial rule. In many places the encouragement to produce goods for the British market helped the British more than it did the producers.

They were far lower compared to the white workers
What work was given to indigenous people?
They were frequently assigned the most dangerous jobs available. Railway work also forced men to live apart from their families for long periods, as they moved across a country laying track.
What was common during the South African wars (1899 - 1901) at the Transvaal gold mines?
Chinese induced labour. However this was only for a brief period of time as their presence was hugely controversial and anti-slavery activists accused the government revitalising slavery.

They were forced to pay for 70% the costs of the British Indian Army.
