Problems Due To Urban Growth Flashcards
Traffic congestion
The GDA now contains 1.8 million people and the growth of Dublin has led to increased traffic congestion
Population and the increase in wealth has led to an increase in the number of cars in urban areas
In Ireland there are 402 cars per 1000
Economic growth during the boom years 1995 to 2007 has also increased the number of heavy goods vehicles on Irish roads
There have add to traffic congestion especially nears ports e.g.dublin port
Traffic congestion result in long journey times for commuters
In Ireland public transport is being upgraded but still does not provide the service required to many people
E.g.. extension of luas lines, more bus corridors
Traffic restrictions are in place preventing cars from entering certain areas e.g. five-axle bun in Dublin
Park and ride facilities and quality bus corridors allow the after movement of buses and encourage more people to leave their cars outside the city
Urban sprawl
Urban sprawl is the rapid spread of housing from cities into surrounding countryside
Increased migration leads to urban sprawl
Economic growth, increased car ownership =urban sprawl
Rapid population growth due to rural to urban migration, immigration=Urban sprawl
Small villages swamped by residents who commute to work each day to Dublin, greystones, swords
Villages grow because cheaper housing, land availability
Traffic congestion problem in rural areas in commuter rush hour
Local schools around city become overcrowded
Urban areas expand to greenfield areas, problem for farmers as they compete with property developers
Difficult to enlarge their farmlands
