Problem statement Flashcards
What are the two types of relevance?
- Academic relevance
- Managerial relevance
What does academic relevance mean?
That the same problem should not have been researched before.
What does managerial relevance mean?
That researching the problem needs to benefit managers, consumers, and/or public policymakers.
What defines a good problem statement?
- An open-ended question
- That identifies the study’s unit of analysis
- That is expressed in terms of (i) variables and (ii) relationships
What is the unit of analysis?
The unit of analysis is the entity that the study wishes to say something about.
What is the difference between inductive and deductive reasoning?
1) Inductive reasoning goes from specific observations to general conclusions
2) Deductive reasoning starts with general principles to reach specific conclusions
What is the difference between a pure and quasi moderator?
Pure moderator: variable that genuinely influences the relationship between independent and dependent variables.
Quasi moderator: variable that appears to influence but lacks true interaction effect.
What is a moderator?
Influences the strength or direction of the relationship between the IV and DV.
What is a mediator?
Explains the “how” or “why” of the relationship between the IV and DV
What is the difference between a full and partial mediator?
Full mediator: fully explains relationships between IV and DV
Partial mediator: partially explains the relationship but leaves a direct effect
