What is a ligature?
A thread tied around a blood vessel to stop bleeding.
What is a transfusion?
The process of giving blood from a donor to the patient.
How were blood transfusions carried out in the C17th?
Blood from animals (usually pigs and sheep) was transferred to humans.
Describe the work of Ambroise Pare.
Developed metal clips to place on arteries during operations. He also tried using silk thread to tie blood vessels after amputation instead of using heat to seal them. Far less painful, but these ligatures did not always stop the bleeding if they were not tied properly.
What is a cautery?
The use of heat to deal blood vessels to stop bleeding.
