What does a BPE score of 0 mean
No pockets > 3.5 no calculus or overhangs, no bleeding after probing (black band completely visible)

No pockets > 3.5 no calculus or overhangs, but bleeding after probing (black band completely visible)
What does a BPE score of 2 mean
No pockets > 3.5mm, but supra or subgingival calculus/overhangs (black band completely visible)
What does a BPE score of 3 mean
probing depth of 3.5 - 5.5 mm (black band partially visible, indicating pocket of 4-5 mm)
What does a BPE score of 4 mean
probing depth < 5.5 mm (black band entirely within the pocket, indicating pocket of 6mm or more)
What does a BPE score of * mean
Furcation involvement
what treatment does someone with a score of 0 need?
None
what treatment does someone with a score of 1 need?
Oral hygiene instruction
what treatment does someone with a score of 2 need?
Oral hygiene instruction, removal of plaque retentive factors such as sub and supragingival calculus
what treatment does someone with a score of 3 need?
Oral hygiene instruction and root surface debridement (RSD)
what treatment does someone with a score of 4 need?
OHI, RSD. access the need for more complex treatment, they may need to be referred to a specialist

when should bleeding on probing be recorded ?
always
when should radiographs be taken after probing?
when a score of 3/4 has been taken (only those sextants need to be x-rayed). Periapical is the gold standard.
