Probability Vocabulary Flashcards
What is a complementary event?
Two events in which either one or the other must happen, but they cannot happen at the same time. The sum of the probability of an event and its complement is 1 or 100%.
What is a compound event?
An event consisting of two or more simple events.
What is an event in probability?
The desired outcome or set of outcomes in a probability experiment.
What is experimental probability?
An estimated probability based on the relative frequency of positive outcomes occurring during an experiment.
What does likelihood refer to?
The chance of an event occurring.
What is an outcome?
Any one of the possible results of an action.
What is probability?
The chance that some event will happen; it is the ratio of the number of favorable outcomes to the number of possible outcomes.
What is a probability experiment?
When you perform an event to find the likelihood of an event.
What is relative frequency?
A ratio that compares the frequency of each category to the total.
What is a relative frequency bar graph?
A graph used to organize occurrences compared to a total.
What is a relative frequency table?
A table used to organize occurrences compared to a total.
What is sample space?
The set of all possible outcomes of a probability experiment.
What is a simple event?
One outcome or a collection of outcomes.
What is a simulation in probability?
An experiment that is designed to model the action in a given situation.
What is theoretical probability?
The ratio of the number of ways an event can occur to the number of possible outcomes in the sample space.
What is the theoretical probability of a compound event?
The ratio of the number of ways an event can occur to the number of possible outcomes in the sample space.
What is a uniform probability model?
A probability model which assigns equal probability to all outcomes.
