Probability Distributions Flashcards
Evaluate probability associated with distribution; define the discrete and continuous distributions; define a poisson process; generate basic discrete and continuous random variables using simulation methods.
1
Q
What do you understand when you say discrete distributions?
A
This distributions are all models for the number of something- eg. Number of success, number of trials, number of deaths, number of claims. The values assumed by the variable are integers from the set {1, 2, 3, … } - such variables are often referred to as counting variables.
2
Q
Uniform distribution
A
This distribution has equals assignments to all outcomes (ie. All outcomes are equally likely ).
3
Q
Bernoulli distribution
A
A Bernoulli trial is an experiment which has or can be regarded as having only two possible outcomes - success or failure. This distribution can be used to indicate whether or not some specified event, A say, occurs.
