Probability Flashcards
Probability
Numerical measure of degree of belief or relative frequency of events
Sample space
The set of all possible outcomes in a trial
Sample point
One of the possible outcomes in a sample space
Event
A particular set of sample points, to which a probability can be assigned
Random variable
A variable that takes on a different value depending on the even that occurs
Discrete
A finite number of possible outcomes
Continuous
An infinite number of outcomes
Complementary event
The probability of not getting a certain event
Pr(notA) = 1 - Pr(A)
Disjoint events
Two event that are independent of each other ie one event has no impact on the other
Pr(A or B) = Pr(A) + Pr(B)
Non-Disjoint Events
If two event are not independent of each other ie one event impacts the other
Pr(A or B) = Pr(A) + Pr(B) - Pr(A&B)
Cumulative distribution
Cumulative probability up to a certain value of X
Expected value
The average value
