Probability Flashcards
What is predicted probability?
What should happen: when a coin is tossed 100 times, it is expected to land on heads 50 times and tails 50 times
When is a sample unbiased?
When it is the square root of the population, and it tends to all ages and genders and is chosen at random
What is experimental probability?
What’s actually happens when it is put to the test
What are ‘odds’?
If you get a certain answer a couple of times in a row, the ‘odds’ are that you will have the same answer again
What is a Venn diagram?
A Venn diagram is a graph that is used to shown groups of objects or beings
What does Union (u) mean when applied to Venn diagrams?
That the objects that are in union are part of the same group
What does intersection (n) mean when applied to Venn diagrams?
Intersection is when people or objects from two different groups are connected and part of a different group together
What does complementary mean?
Every thing else but one.
Eg. the complements of diamonds is spades, hearts and clubs.
What is the rule for working out the complement?
P(A’) = 1 - P(A)
What are mutually exclusive events?
Two events that can’t possibly occur at the same time
What is independent probability?
One result doesn’t affect the other results
What is conditional probability?
Based on a reduced set of numbers
Eg. Probability of a factor of six based on prime numbers out of 10
