Probability Flashcards
What is an experiment?
A process that produces observations
What is a trial?
A single repetition of an experiment
What is a sample space?
All possible outcomes for an experiment
What is an event?
A possible outcome stated in terms of members of the sample space.
Counting rule:
Number of outcomes = n1 x n2 n3 x……..
What does ! mean
Factorial.
Excel Functions for factorial eg 3 people from 10 volunteers.
FACT (3) X FACT (7)
OR
COMBIN(10,3)
Permuatations in excel
E.G 8 athletes, 3 podium spots
=PERMUT(8,3)
3 ways of measuring probability:
– Exact probability
– Relative frequency
– Subjective assessment
What is exact probability?
All outcomes have the same chance of happening
What is relative frequency?
Observe repeated trials of an experiment. The relative frequency
(proportion) estimates the probability
What is subjective assessment?
Personal measure of uncertainty. Usedirect information, personal judgement and experience to give subjective assessment.
