Aircraft Required Equipment
- TCDS
- 91.205
- headset
Inoperative Equipment Flow
(They will mention something is not working on the plane)
Order of Heirarchy
- TCDS
- MEL/KOEL (we don’t have)
- POH
- Airworthiness Directives or Service Bulletins
Actions before Operating Aircraft (if not required or ferry permit)
- Inop equipment must be removed/deactivated
- log in maintenance records if removed/deactivated by a mechanic
- Placard INOP
- PIC makes final decision if safe to fly
Preventative Maintenance
- pilot certificate holder may perform preventative maintenance
- Part 43 Appendix A (c)
- ex. replacing light bulbs, etc.
- must log in maintenance logs (date, work performed, signature, certificate type and number)
Special Flight Permit
- issued by FSDO (Flight Standards District Office)
- for aircraft that are “unairworthy” due to inop equipment
- only for flight to point of repairs
- only required crew
Stall/Spin
- Stall occurs when an airplane exceeds its critical angle of attack
- Spin is when both wings are stalled, one more than the other, in uncoordinated flight
What is a METAR and often is updated?
Meteorological Aerodrome Report
- current/observed weather
- updated 50 minutes past the hour
What is a TAF and how often are they updated/valid?
Terminal Aerodrome Forecast
- weather forecasts valid for 24 hours
- updated every 6 hours
What is a runway incursion?
An incident where any unauthorized aircraft, vehicle, person, or entity (animal, etc.) is on a runway or runway protected area
What are Lost Comms Procedures?
Troubleshoot
- check radio on
- check volume
- check headset plug connection
- check frequency
- request radio check
- go back to last used frequency
In controlled airspace, squawk 7600
- stay above traffic pattern altitude
- wait for ATC light gun signals, rock wings to acknowledge
Uncontrolled airspace
- land as soon as practicable
What is windshear and how do we avoid it?
- a sudden change in wind speed and/or direction
- increase takeoff/approach speed to account for
Student Pilot privileges and limitations
- cannot carry passengers
- must carry endorsement required to act as PIC
Private pilot privileges and limitations
- can carry passengers
- may act as PIC
- do not need to carry logbook
- must pay pro rata share
Special consideration when carrying passengers
Day: 3 takeoffs and landings during daytime
Night: 3 takeoffs and landings to a fullstop
Proficency vs Currency
- Proficiency is your own personal comfort and abilities.
- Currency refers to legal obligations for flight.
How do you maintain currency?
Flight review every 24 calendar months
When is logging flight time required?
- staying current (ex. Landings for carrying passengers, etc.)
- training for a new certificate/rating/endorsement
