Private Pilot Flashcards
“BR” metar abreviation
Mist
think “baby rain”
Standard Temperature and Pressure
59°F (15°C) & 29.92in (1013,25mb) or (1013.25 hectopascal)
METAR
Meteorological Terminal Aviation Routine Weather Report
(routine surface observation at airport every 55min)
-valid for 1 hour
TAF
Terminal Aerodrome Forcast
- Aerodrome = 6SM radius from airport
- Usually good for 24 hours but can be shorter if wx is unstable
True vs. Magnetic
if you read it, it’s True.
if you hear it, it’s Magnetic.
Which two instruments operate on the vacuum system?
-The heading indicator
The attitude indicator
Does the heading indicator only rely on the vacuum system?
-No. It also uses gyroscopic precession
Which is why it’s also called directional gyro
Why doesn’t the heading indicator work when taxiing?
-Because it needs the engine driven vacuum pump to function.
Kollsman Window
-What is the box called where you dial in atmospheric pressure?
What happens if the pitot tube is blocked?
-Airspeed goes to zero
What happens if the pitot drain is blocked?
?
What happens if the static port is blocked?
- -Airspeed indicator goes to zero.
- Vertical speed shows zero.
- Altimeter is stuck on the altitude where the port was frozen over/ blocked
Is the turn coordinator part of the pitot static system?
-No. It is electric.
Used DC power
(That is why we check for the red flag when preflighting. This shows if a circuit breaker is out)
What instruments make up the pitot static system?
- 1) Airspeed indicator
2) Altimeter
3) Vertical speed indicator
How many MajorMigratory Flyways Exist?
- FOUR
1) The Atlantic Flyway
2) The Mississippi Flyway
3) The Central Flyway
4) The Pacific Flyway
