What preflight information is required before each flight
RAW FAT
Runway information
Alternates if flight cannot be completed
Weather

Takeoff/Landing distance
What meteorological conditions does a prognostic chart show?
Significant weather prognostic chartsprovide a visual overview of forecast significant weather conditions over a large geographic area, including freezing levels, turbulence, and convective activity.Prognostic charts are an excellent source of information for preflight planning; however, this chart should be viewed in light of current conditions and specific local area forecasts.
Where does wind shear typically occur?
- 3 hours after a cold front
- 6 hours before a warm front
- between 2000-4000 ft with winds of 25+ knots
Why are downdrafts in a mature thunderstorm hazardous?
Cold air is more dense and kept cold by the rain, accelerating the rate of descent of downdrafts. Warm air would slow the rate of descent.
What conditions are necessary for the formation of thunderstorms?
For a thunderstorm to form, the air must have (1) sufficient water vapor, (2) an unstable lapse rate, and (3) an initial upward boost (lifting) to start the storm process in motion
What are the 4 forces exerted on an airplane?
Lift, weight, thrust, drag
What errors does the magnetic compass have? Describe each
- Dip
- Turning
- Acceleration
How does the heading indicator operate?
- Vacuum system spins a gyro
- Gimbals rotate when turning, which turns the indicator
- Indicator requires alignment with the magnetic compass during preflight
- Use the indicator to verify runway
- Requires realignment every 10-15 minutes during flight as the earth rotates
Define Aeronautical Decision Making (ADM)
ADM is a systematic approach to the mental process used by aircraft pilots to consistently determine the best course of action in response to a given set of circumstances
What is a common model to follow for ADM?
DECIDE
- Detect a change/hazard
- Estimate the need to counter/react
- Choose the best outcome
- Identify actions for that outcome
- Do, take action
- Evaluate the effect/results
3P’s
- Perceive
- Process
- Perform
How is the 3P model different from the DECIDE model?
3P is a continuous loop of a pilot handling hazards, like traffic. The DECIDE model focuses on particular problems that require resolution.
Name 5 hazardous attitudes, define them, and give an antidote
- Anti-authority; Don’t Tell me; Follow the rules, they’re usually right
- Impulsivity; Do it quickly; Not so fast, think first
- Invulnerability; It won’t happen to me; It could happen to me
- Macho; I can do it; Taking chances is foolish
- Resignation; What’s the use?; I’m not helpless, I can make a difference
What is one method you can use to manage and control risk?
PAVE
- Pilot (IM SAFE)
- Aircraft
- Environment
- External Pressure
What is an example of a personal risk assessment?
IM SAFE
- Illness
- Medication
- Stress
- Alcohol
- Fatigue
- Eating/emotion
What are the eligibility requirements for a privot pilot certificate?
- 17 years old
- Read, write, and understand english
- Pass FAA written test
- Pass check ride exam
- Hold a student pilot, sport pilot, or recreational pilot certificate
- Hold at least a current 3rd class medical certificate
- Meet applicable aeronautical experience requirements
