What are the three main categories of information NCUA’s privacy rule identifies?
- Nonpublic Personal Information
- Personally Identifiable Financial Information

What is nonpublic personal information?
The category of information protected by the consumer privacy rule.
What is Personally Identifiable Financial Information?
Any information the CU collects about a consumer in connection with providing a financial product or service.
What are examples of Personally Identifiable Financial Information?
- Information provided by the consumer during the application process, such as a name or address
- Information resulting from the financial product or service transaction, such as payment history, loan or deposit balances
- Information from other sources about the consumer obtained in connection with providing the financial product or service, such as credit report
- The fact that the individual is a consumer of the credit union
What is publicly available information?
Information that a CU reasonably believes is publicly available. This occurs where a CU has taken steps to determine that the information is of the type that is generally available to the public. A phone number might be publicly available if the number is listed.
