Prism Flashcards
Apical angle, refracting angle
The angle formed by the intersection of the two surfaces at the apex
Angle of deviation
The angle the ray of light is bent after passing though the prism/ prism power, refracting power
Flat prism
The 2 non parallel surfaces have plane sides that do not change the vergence of incident light
Meniscus prism
The two non parallel surfaces are curved and often posses focal power in addition to prism power (used in glasses)
A prism changes the direction of light without changing
It’s vergence
The deviation of light with a prism causes
Light to bend towards the base
Image to bend towards the apex
PD creates a deviation of ___ unit at a distance of 100 Units
1 unit
1 PD causes deviation of ____ at a distance of 1m
1 cm
When prism is introduced monocularly, the eye moves an amount equal to
The angle of deviation ( eyes turn towards the apex)
Resultant prismatic effect
Net separation of the eyes, the extent of the disjunctive movement
How can you use prism clinically
Therapeutically
Reduce PAL thickness
Exam room
Prescribed
How is prism used therapeutically
Vision therapy under doctor supervision and weekly sessions, sometimes with home exercises
How is prim used in vision therapy programs
Visually train eyes monocular or binocular. Image is moved to make eyes diverge/converge/ or make a version movement
How is prism used to reduce PALS thickness
Equal amounts of vertical prism can reduce overall thickness and is called prism thinning (BU prism is removed)
How is prism used in the exam room?
Cover test to quantify alignment( tropias/phorias)
Fusional ranges
