Explain the “stability” of the chronic illness vs. an acute illness.
Chronic illness is stable.
Acute illness is unstable.
How many hours AFTER a surgery does the patient become stable?
After 12 hours you can consider the patient to be stable.
How stable is a patient if they are about to discharge?
A patient must be stable if discharging.
How many hours must pass before a newly admitted or diagnosed patient is considered stable?
They become stable once 24 hours passes.
There’s a change found in assessment. Is the patient stable or unstable?
Unstable
A patient is experiencing symptoms that are not typical or expected for their diagnosis.
Are they considered stable or unstable?
Unstable because its not expected & there could be something else causing the unexpected signs and symptoms.
What 4 conditions will always be unstable?
- Hemorrhage
- Fever over 105 bc of seizures
- Hypoglycemia or below 70
- No pulse or breathing
What should you ask yourself if you need a tie breaker when trying to decide priority?
Which organ is involved.
What is the order for vital organs?
Brain, lungs, heart, liver, kidney, pancreas
