Principles of motor learning Flashcards
acquisition
temporary performance enhacement during treatment or practice, influenced by fatigue, learning skills, motivation, etx
Learning
long-term retention and generalization of improved performance
Phases of motor learning
1) Cognitive or acquisition
2) Associative
3) Automatization phase
4) Retention (transfer)phase
5) Generalization
Cognitive/acquisition phase
- learns about goal and what it takes to improve
- requires attention and effort during task
- fast but variable improvements
- development of motor program
Associative phase
- refinement of skills and motor program
- more consistent performance
- cognitive monitoring decreases
Automatization phase
- full automatic controle and reduction of attention demands
- requires extended practice in varying speaking conditions
- ability to detect own errors improves
Retention (transfer) phase
a time interval long enough to ensure lasting effects of training in specific, practiced conditions
Generalization
-using skill in situations and environments different from practice conditions
-full understanding of motions involved
ability to self-monitor and evaluate
-full flexiblilty in use of acquired skill
