Basic Principles of Gestalt Therapy
Holism, Field Theory, Figure-Formation Process, Organismic Self-Regulation
What is holism?
Looking at the individual as a whole; as a Gestalt
What is Field Theory?
The organism must be seen in their ENVIRONMENT/CONTEXT as part of their constantly evolving field
What are figure and ground?
Figure- aspects of individual’s self-experience that are CONSCIOUS; Ground- Aspects of self-experience which are OUT OF ONE’S CONSCIOUSNESS- the therapist may pay attention to either one of these two
What is the figure formation process?
When diff aspects of the environment emerge from the background and become a part of the individuals’ interest. G-Therapists helps to move away/toward this figure of interest
What is Organismic Self Regulation?
When the equilibrium of the individual is lost for some reason, the person loses the ability to self regulate; therapist must use figure formtn process to bring back ability to self regulate
