- important for mineral/hydrocarbon extraction, mitigation of natural hazards, and historical analysis

A
- provides link between geo and engineering through the formation of geological models
- models are used to identify geo hazards/uncertainty, plan effective ground investigations, and define ground blocks/geo structures to facilitate geotechnical risk assessment/design
- also concerned with the determination of geo and hydro conditions
- principles: an attempt to predict the future changes of the engineered earth’s surface by reference to causes now in operation

A
- anticipating unforeseen ground conditions and making them become foreseen
- ground=geotechnically complex
- the complexity is not random/unpredictable
- geo engineering can anticipate this
