Principles of disease control Flashcards
Biosecurity of poultry
Prevent disease entering
Potential to eradicate
Good biosecurity is not only applicable to disease control that affects the bird e.g. Newcastle disease or Mycoplasma
Also applicable to the control of zoonotic disease e.g. Salmonella
Vaccination often though to be the reason for successful reduction in salmonella incidents in chickens
Vaccine not introduced into the UK until 1994
Biosecurity also a key factor in the reduction of incidences
Bio-secure farm set up
§ Isolate from other poultry
□ Commercial
□ Backyard
§ Defined sites
§ Well maintained bird proof housing
§ Vermin control
Farm management of biosecurity
§ Farmers must not have contact with other poultry
□ Other commercial
□ Backyard poultry at home
§ All in all out systems
□ Cleaning and disinfection between the flocks
