negative reinforcement
removing an adversive stimulus
positive punishment
adding an adversive stimulus
negative punishment
removing a reinforcing stimulus
reinforcer
a stimulus that is either delievered or removed that will increase the likelihood of that response occuring in the future
punisher
something that causes the target behavior to decrease
conditioned reinforcer
occurs when a stimulus has acquired the capacity to reinforce behaviors through its learned association with a primary reinforcer
a stimulus that initially has no reinforcing properties
a stimulus in the environment that functions as a reinforcer due to past experiences
(secondary reinforcer)
unconditioned reinforcer
(primary reinforcer) reinforcement that is inherent: food, clothing, &
reinforcer that does not have to be learned
extinction
a procedure by which a behavior that was previously reinforced no longer recieves reinforcement and the probability of the behavior decreases
deprivation
the more deprived of a particular reinforcer, the more powerful that reinforcer wil become
used to make it clear that reinforcement is available if the correct response is given
satiation
repeated presentation of a reinforcer weakens its effectiveness, causes decline in rate of responses
contingency
the specified dependencies or relations between behavior and its antecedents and consequences
can be either a reinforcement or punishment that occurs after a behavior has been expressed by an individual or group
motivating operation
an environmental variable that alters the reinforcing effectiveness of some stimulus, object, or event
antecedent
the events, actions, or circumstances that occur immediately before a behavior
behavior
anything a person says or does
