Q
Describe what is meant by selection pressure and antimicrobial resistance
A

Q
The ability of a bacteria to becomes resistant to an antibiotic is the result of a change in the bacterial DNA, by what 2 mechanisms does this occur ?
A
- Genetic mutation - misreading of the DNA
- Transfer of DNA that codes for antibiotic resistance from one bacterium to another by a) Transformation, b) Conjugation or c) Transduction
3
Q
What are the 3 mechanisms of antibiotic resistance ?
A
- Altered antibiotic binding site
- Destruction or inactivation of the antibiotic
- Increased efflux
