Principles of Counseling
Counseling is based upon the following principles.
- Counseling is client-centered being concerned in the holistic development of the individual
- Counseling must respect the right of every person to accept or refuse the services it offers.
- Counseling is based on the recognition of individual differences, dignity, and worth of the individual and on his right to personal assistance in time of need.
- Counseling is focused on helping the individual realize and actualize the best self.
- Counseling is a continuous, sequential, and educational process.
- Counseling involves using skills to communicate love, regard, and respect for others
- Counseling has a responsibility to society as well as to the individual
Core Values of Counseling
Understanding the Client or Counselee is anchored on the following core values:
There is no need to overemphasize the necessity for having a positive regard for the client. It is by respecting the potential of every person for change
Responsible Caring
There is the need to properly understand the client, his feelings, thinking and behavior when he presents himself for counseling
Respect for human dignity
Counselors must never any, “I don’t understand my client, I don’t know why they are so resistant to help” and “I’m not sure if I knows or am doing the right thing with them”.
Personal integrity
Having a proper regard for the client opens the door to understanding the person. The client is the primary focus of attention, the person’s problems are the target of intervention with respect for confidentiality.
Autonomy
The counselor must always enter the client’s world and begin from there. The counselor must appreciate the difficulties experienced by the client in coming for counseling and be ready to seek
Partnership
It is expected that individuals would have a proper sense of pride in themselves and dignifled in their own way that reaching out for help must never be a great loss of face and dignity, and counselors must be aware that there is a social stigma attached to seeking such help
Social Justice

Counselors may need to understand that individuals react to counseling with
Reluctance, defensiveness, and resistance
There are also necessary ingredients for a satisfactory helping relationship in counseling that will start with
1 trust, 2) empathy, 3) genuineness, 4) concern and caring, 5) respect, 6 tolerance and acceptance, 7) honesty, and 8) commitment to the relationship and dependability
These are needed for an effective emphatic and emphatic communication.
