Q

What statement is the author, Mark Twain, trying to make about government, nobility, and royal life? How can you tell?

A

Twain is showing us that he feels nobles and the government are corrupt and not really doing anything to help the people of the country. The government officials only make decisions that benefit themselves. He thinks that they mistreat their people.

He also feels that the nobility does ridiculous and over-the-top things. We can tell by Twain’s detailed descriptions of the elaborate rituals and all of the servants they have to do everything for them such as getting dressed and serving them at dinner. He also believes that Henry VIII was evil and violent. We can tell by Twain’s description of him and how scared everyone was of him.

A

The Great Seal is the official seal of the king he used to show his official approval of important documents. He cannot officially approve any important decisions without it. At this time, Henry cannot officially approve the execution of the Duke of Norfolk without the seal. Henry needs to have him executed because he is worried that he will try to take the throne, so it is very important that they quickly locate the seal.

What is the purpose of a whipping boy? How does Tom use the whipping boy to his advantage?

A

The whipping boy is whipped instead of the prince when the prince doesn’t do well on his lessons because no one is allowed to whip the prince. Tom plans to use the whipping boy to practice what to do when people ask him about things he doesn’t know. He also uses the whipping boy to learn about life in the palace, the people in the palace, and how to act like a king. He pretends the whipping boy is helping to bring his memories back.
