Primitive Reflexes Flashcards
Moro
*most sensitive neuro assessment
Test: make loud noise or drop head slightly; Cries, head falls back, arms should spread out/fingers extend out before flexing then arms adduct inward
Findings: asymmetry = paralysis or fractured clavicle; absent brainstem
*Disappears around 4-6 mo
Babinski
Test: stroke foot sole from heel upward to toes
Findings: abduction fanning normal until 2 years
*Disappears by 2 y.o.!! Red flag if not
Rooting
Test: stroke cheek & baby turns to side
Findings: no turning indicates CNS/neuro disease
-May not respond if sleeping
*Disappears around 4 mo
Plantar grasp
Test: press finger firmly against toe base
Findings: toes should curl down to test S1-S2
*Disappears around 10-12 mo
Sucking
Test: place gloved finger in mouth
Findings: strong suck, otherwise CNS disease
-Document if recently fed & unable to test
*Disappears around 4 mo
Tonic neck / fencers
Test: turn/hold head to side for 15 sec when supine
Findings: arm/leg extend with head turned, flex opposite arm, otherwise CNS lesion

Findings: baby wraps fingers around yours strongly & symmetrically
*Disappears around 2-3 mo
