16
Q

Where is heparin harvested from ?

A

Pig liver, lung, and intestines. Its is also a natural anticoagulant in mast cells.

17
Q

Action of Heparin?

A

Heparin binds to antithrombin III (AT III) and super-activates its function.

  • Low doses= prevents conversion of prothrombin to thrombin by deactivation of factor Xa.
  • High doses = Thrombin is neutralized preventing the conversion of fibrinogen to fibrin.
18
Q

Heparin
Circuit Dose?
Patient dose ?

A
Circuit = 5000 u
Patient = 300 mg/kg
19
Q

Manitol pharmacological classification ?

A

Osmotic diuretic

20
Q

Action of Manitol an organic sugar alcohol ?

A

Increases Osmotic pressure of the glomerular filtrate, thereby inhibiting reabsorption of water and electrolytes and therefore causing its excretion.

21
Q

Ischemia increases “oxidative stress” and forms many oxygen radicals. How do these radicals effect the human body and what medication is indicated to treat this condition?

A

Free radical have an odd number of unpaired electrons. Each time a free radical comes into contact with tissue cells, the free radical steals one of its electrons creating free radical damage to the tissue. This condition can be resolved with administration of mannitol which would provide electrons to these free radicals.

22
Q

Sodium Bicarbonate

NaHCO3

A

Disassociates into Na+ and bicarbonate ions HCO3. Bicarbonate acts as a buffer to neutralize acidosis.

23
Q

Amicar

A

Inhibition of Plasmin Activators. Helpful after bypass with stabilization of clot formation. Amicar should be administered before the case.

24
Q

Albumin

A

-Human Blood protein
-5% = plasma oncotic force
-Increases oncotic properties of prime
-Reduces surface adhesion, helps to de-air circuit.
“we know we do not use enough”

25
Q

BSA formula ?

A

(kg ^0.425)(cm^0.725)(constant 71.84)

26
Q

1” = ( ) CM ?

A

2.54 cm

27
Q

1 kg = ( ) lbs ?

A

2.2 lbs

28
Q

Cardiac index used?

A

2.4

29
Q

Adult Blood volume calculation?

A

(Weight in Kg) (75) = BV

30
Q

Top Flow Calculation ?

A

(BSA) (CI) = Top flow LPM

31
Q

Top Flow LPM indicates what?

A

It indicates what circuit pack we will use for the case. Adult, child, pediatric, or infant.

32
Q

Adult tubing pack ?

A
PV = 1500ml
TF = 6.0 LPM
3/8art X 1/2ven
Filter - AF200X
Oxygenator = Rx25
33
Q

Child tubing pack?

A
PV = 1250 ml
TF = 5.0 LPM
3/8art X 3/8ven
Filter - AF200X
Oxygenator = Rx15
34
Q

Pediatric tubing pack?

A
PV = 850 ml
TF = 2.5 LPM
1/4art X 3/8ven
Filter - AF02
Oxygenator = SX10
35
Q

Infant tubing pack?

A
PV = 500 ml
TF = 1.5 LPM
1/4art X 1/4ven
Filter - AF02
Oxygenator = Baby RX
36
Q

Patient’s Red Cell Volume (RCVp) calculation?

A

(.Hct)(Blood Volume “BV”)

37
Q

Pediatric Blood volume calculation?

A

(Weight kg)( 85ml)

38
Q

Resultant Hct calculation?

A

RCVp / (BVp + PV)

“patient’s red cell volume/ (patient’s blood volume + prime volume)”
