Prime Mover Flashcards
Who came up with the concept?
Aristotle
What must the prime mover be?
- Pure actuality with no potential
. Indestructible
. Eternal
. Unmovable
How can the prime mover be described?
- uncaused causer
- unmoved mover
- necessary (cannot not exist) being
What is the prime movers purpose?
Actualises potentiality
- causal influence
Why can’t PM create the universe?
By creating the universe PM would be moving which requires time but time would not exists therefore time and movement is the same thing. Also by moving PM is the efficient cause and is not perfect and is involved in time so is not immaterial. The world is incoherent and nonsensical
How does PM actualise potentiality?
All has the desire to become perfect like PM
- imitate PM
What cause is PM?
Final cause, teleological cause of the universe
- it is everything’s telos/ purpose as they desire to be actualised
Who is prime mover?
God! But not the abrihamic God.
What did Aristotle say about the universe?
‘For there could not be a before and an after if time did not exist’
How is Aristotles God different to Abrahamic God?
Aristotles God has no divine plan/ does not know the world- if he did he would be involved in the universe and would be moving. Only thinks about himself or wouldn’t be perfect.
Abrahamic God is all knowing, a personal God, created universe and involved in universe.
How is this comparable to form of the good?
PM is perfect- good that all strives to be
Form of good- good that all strives to be
