An elevated, firm, circumscribed area; less than 1 cm in diameter
Papule: e.g. Wart(verruca), elevated moles, lichen planus
A flat, circumscribed area that is a change in the color of the skin; less than 1 cm in diameter
Macule: e.g. Freckles, flat moles( nevi), petechiae, measles
A flat, non palpable, irregularly shaped macule greater than 1cm in diameter
Patch: e.g. Vitiligo, port-wine stains, Mongolian spots, cafe au lait patch
Elevated, firm, and rough lesion with a flat top surface greater than 1 cm in diameter
Plaque: e.g. Psoriasis, seborrheic, and actinic keratosis
Elevated, irregular shaped area of cutaneous edema; solid, transient, variable diameter
Wheal: e.g. Insect bites, urticaria, allergic reaction
Elevated, firm, circumscribed lesion; deeper in dermis than papule; 1-2cm in diameter
Nodule: e.g. Erythema nodosum, lipoma
Elevated and solid lesion; May or may not be clearly demarcated; deeper in dermis; greater than 2cm in diameter
Tumor: e.g. Neoplasms, benign tumor, lipoma
Elevated, circumscribed, superficial, not into dermis; filled with serous fluid; less than 1cm in diameter
Vesicle: e.g. Varicella( chickenpox), herpes zoster( shingles)
Vesicles greater than 1 cm in diameter
Bulla: e.g. Blister, pemphigus vulgaris
Elevated, superficial lesion; similar to Vesicle but filled with purulent material
Pustule: e.g. Impetigo, acne
Elevated, circumscribed, encapsulated lesion; in dermis or subcutaneous layer; filled with liquid or semisolid material
Cyst: e.g. Sebaceous cyst, cystic acne
Fine, irregular, red lines produced by capillary dilation
Telangiectasia: in rosacea
