Primary Economic Activity Flashcards
Renewable Resources
Can be used over and over. Eg. Water
Non-renewable resources
Will eventually run out. Eg. Oil
The water cycle
Evaporation,Condensation,Precipitation,Run-off.
Primary Economic Activity
Farming,Fishing,Forestry,Mining
Oil
Non-renewable resource and we need to try to conserve the oil we gave
Oil producing country
Saudi Arabia
Gas and Oil in Ireland
The is not much yet we are exploring the coastline
Peat
Non-renewable resource found in Ireland
Bogs
Peat is cut from bogs
Types of bogs
Raised Bogs and Blanket Bogs
Blanket bogs
Western counties in Ireland. Shallow bogs. Average dept= 2.6 metres
Raised bogs
Midlands in Ireland. About 8 metres
Ditcher
Is used to dig drains to dry out the bog.
Grader
Is used to level the bog.
Miller
Harvests the peat by scraping loose a thin layer on top of the bog.
Harrow
Is used to dry out the loose peat on the surface.
Ridger
Gathers the loose dry peat into ridges
Irrigation
Irrigation is used when an area is in drought. It is a supply of water that is piped to the area that needs fresh water.
Over-exploitation
Using to much of a resource.
Depletion
Stocks of fish get used up.
Continental shelf
Area around the coastline
Renewable energy sources
Geothermal energy, tidal energy, solar energy, wind energy, hydro electric power.
Geothermal energy
Created by pumping cold water into the earths crust. Results in steam and hot water.
Tidal energy
The power of the rising and falling tides can be used to turn turbines. This tidal energy creates electricity.
Solar energy
Light by the sun captured by solar panels.
Wind energy
Wind turbines used to create electricity. Popular source of renewable energy.
Hydro electric power (HEP)
Force of falling water. Involves the use of a dam and turbine.
Saudi Arabia
Produces the most oil in the world.
Membership of the eec (Eu)
Sharing our waters/fish
Modern technology
The use of sonar and radar
Mesh(net sizes)
Nets are too small- undeveloped fish are being caught,no breeding.
Seasons and quotas.
No closed fishing season.
