-Innervation: anterior rami of C1-C3
-Actions: Flexion of head on neck
Rectus capitis anterior
(Ant)
-Innervation: Branches loop between C1 and C2
-Actions: Flexion of head on neck
Anterior scalene
(Ant)
-Innervation: C4-C6
-Actions: Forced inspiration, elevates 1st rib
Rectus capitis lateralis
(lateral)
-Innervation: Branches loop between C1 and C2
-Actions: Flexes head and helps stabilize it
Splenius capitis
(lateral)
-Innervation: Posterior rami of middle cervical spinal nerves
-Actions: lateral flexion and rotation of head and neck to same side, extends head and neck
Levator scapulae
(lateral)
-Innervation: Dorsal scapular nerve C5, Cervical spinal nerves C3 and C4
-Actions: Elevates scapula and tilts glenoid cavity inferiorly by rotating scapula
Middle scalene
(lateral)
-Innervation: Anterior rami of cervical spinal nerves
-Actions: Flexes neck laterally; forced inspiration, elevates 1st rib
Posterior scalene
(lateral)
-Innervation: Anterior rami of cervical spinal nerves C7 and C8
-Action: Flexes neck laterally; elevates 2nd rib during forced inspiration
