Prevention Flashcards
How does diet advice help prevention?
Reduce freq and amount of sugar,
Only have sugar in mealtimes
Provide assistance to allow patients to have good dietary practice
What are the pillars of prevention?
Diet analysis, fissure sealants, fluoride, OHI, recall interval
How does fissure sealants help prevention?
Remove the large grooves so less plaque retention there, however if not well bonded to tooth it can leak and cause caries beneath
How does fluoride help prevention?
its a protective factor so low exposure increases risk, add topical fluoride- (varnish) and shorten recall interval based on caries
How does OHI help prevention?
Focus on brushing technique, ensure plaque is removed form hard to reach sites, toothpaste should contain fluoride, spit don’t rinse, timing of brushing, make interproximal cleaning necessary like flossing
How does saliva help prevention?
less saliva = higher caries risk, sjogrens syndrome, can prescribe saliva substitutes
How does smoking cessation help prevention?
smokers have up to 6x more likely signs of periodontal disease, increased risk of recurrence, offer advice to patient
How to offer prevention for toothwear?
identify if intrinsic or extrinsic acid source, if in talk to gp, if ex do a diet analysis,
for abrasion identify abrasive source if attrition prevent grinding habit
What is genetics a risk factor for?
periodontal disease
What is the primary stage of prevention?
Reducing disease within the population through universal measures or targeting high risk groups
What is the secondary stage of prevention?
Intervening and detecting early stages of disease before full symptoms develop
What is the tertiary level of prevention?
Reducing impact of ongoing illness with lasting effects
