Preventing and treating coronary heart disease Flashcards
Heart transplant steps & problems
Involves an operation where the patients heart is replaced with a healthy heart from a donor. This can be very effective but sometimes there are problems
- Shortage of donor
- Rejection of organs
Coronary Bypass steps
An operation in which a small vein is taken from the leg and are used to bypass the blocked portion of coronary artery and so restore blood flow to heart tissue
Explain what happens during a heart attack
fatty deposits such as cholesterol build up in coronary arteries and restrict blood flow to the heart muscle this is called coronary heart disease. If the blood flow is severely restricted the heart muscle is starved of oxygen and glucose (less respiration = less energy) and the muscle cells will die. This is a heart attack
