Germinal matrix intraventricular haemorrhages (GM-IV)
Involves bleeding in the germinal matrix, a transient structure within the developing brain located along the floor of the lateral ventricles.
What is false about the grades of GM-IVH?
I. They are graded according to severity
II. The higher graded forms lead to cPVL
III. Grades 3 and 4 increase the risk for cerebral palsy
IV. Haemorrhages usually occur secondary to blood pressure fluctuations soon after birth
II is false, the more severe forms lead to PHI
Periventricular haemorrhagic infarction (PHI)
A more severe form of haemorrhage. It conveys a risk of serious neurological and intellectual compromise, often including spastic diplegia
Cystic periventricular leukomalacia (cPVL)
A non-haemorrhagic injury involving necrosis in the periventricular region, seccondary to hypoxia-ischaemia or cerebrovascular inflammation in an immature central nervous system
