Pressure in Gases Flashcards
What happens when gas particles collide with the surface of a container?
They exert a force on the container
Two factors affecting the total force exerted on a container
-Frequency of collisions
-Force of collisions
Key factor affecting the temperature of a gas
The average kinetic energy of the molecules within a gas
What will happen if a gases temperature increases?
Its pressure will also increase
Why pressure increases in gases as temperature does
Particles are moving faster as they have more KE therefore the force+frequency of collisions increases
Boyle’s Law
For a fixed mass of gas held at constant temperature the product of the gas pressure and volume occupied by the gas is equal to a constant
Equations relating to Boyle’s Law
pV=Constant OR p1V1=p2V2
How are gas pressure and volume related to eachother
They are inversely proportional
Effect on temperature when a gas is compressed
It increases
Effect on temperature when a gas expands
It decreases
