Pressure in Gas Flashcards
How do colliding gas particles create Pressure?
As they move they collide with each other and whatever else is in the way, when they collide with something they exert a force on it.
What is the outward gas pressure in a sealed container?
total force exerted by all the particles in the gas on a unit area of the container walls
What leads to an increase in pressure?
Faster particles and more frequent collisions as they both lead to an increase in net force.
How can you increase the pressure if the volume is constant?
increase temp to increase speed of particles
How can you increase the pressure if the temp is constant?
Decrease the volume
How are pressure and volume related?
Inversely proportional
What is the relationship between p and v for a gas of fixed mass at a constant temp?
pV = constant
Pa(scals)
V = (m^3)
pV = constant so ….
p = k/V
V= k/p
What force does pressure produce on the wall of a gas container?
The pressure produces a net outwards force at right angles to the wall of the gas container (or any surface).
.there’s also a force on the outside of the container due to the pressure of the gas around it.
Pressure = force/area
What can a change in pressure cause for certain containers?
Compression or expansion
What happens when work is done on a gas?
Work is the transfer of energy by a force. Doing work on a gas increases the internal energy of the gas and can cause an increase in the temperature of the gas.
How can you do work on a gas with a bike pump?
It’s done mechanically. The gas applies pressure to the plunger of the pump and so exerts a force on it. Work has do be done on this force to push down the plunger, this transfers energy to the kinetic energy stores of the gas particles increasing the temp. If the pump is connected to a tire it should get warmer.
