Pressure Flashcards
Density of material depends on..
Temperature and pressure
Hydrostatic pressure
Pressure in gases and fluids arising due to gravity
Pressure in fluids and gases is directly proportional to..
Depth (h).
This is only true if the density is the same at every depth.
The hydrostatic paradox
The hydrostatic pressure depends only on the density and in the height of the fluid and is independent on the shape of the container.
Pressure of gases
The particles of a gas are in constant motion and they exert a force on the wall of the container in every collision. The pressure of a gas comes from the sum of all these tiny forces.
Atmospheric (barometric ) pressure
Decrease exponentially with elevation. At 5000 m the pressure is halved. Pressure fluctuates according to temperature and weather conditions.
Partial pressure
In a mixture of gases, each gas has a partial pressure which is the hypothetical pressure of that gas if it alone occupied the container. Sum of partial pressures of each individual gas in the mixture gives the total pressure of the mixture.
