What did the 1964 Civil Rights act do?

-dissalowed literacy tests etc

Effects of the voting rights act:
-by 1980, proportion of black americans was only 7% less than proportion of white

-black unemployment down 34%
-black people below the poverty line down 25%

-black americans continued to live in poor housing, poor schools and poor job opportunities
Why was Johnsons civil rights legislation limited?
-decreased sympathy in congress
-state/local authorities hesitant to cooperate
-white hostility (70% white voters opposed black neighbours)
What was causing the Urban Riots?
-Assassinations of M.X and MLK
-CR movement not effecting north/midwest
-only 32% ghetto students graduated
-in ghettos, 50-70% of youth unemployed (no opportunities)

-Detroit 1967: 40 dead, 5000 arrested, federal troops involved
-Watts 1965: 35 dead, 3500 arrested, $40 mln damage
-Newark 1967: Police brutality caused, 26 dead, most inner city burned
What was the Meredith march (1966)?
-started to encourage black voters in south
-220 mile march
-meredith shot almost immediately, so continued by SCLC and SNCC
-divisions between the two- SNCC radicalised more
