What is a veto?
The power of the president to refuse to sign a bill
What is a pocket veto?
When there is less than 10 days until a Congressional recess, the president can simply decide to not act on a bill, and the bill would have to start over completely anew when Congress adjourns next.
What is a line-item veto?
A power that the a president have sometimes had to strike out specific specific provisions of a bill, without having to veto the entire bill.
What is meant by Commander-in-Chief?
As Commander-in-Chief, the president is the supreme military commander of all the armed forces.
What is meant by Chief Executive?
The president appoints secretaries to lead each of the 15 different departments of the federal government, as well as the heads of various different federal government agencies. The president also appoints numerous other advisers and staff members to assist him/her in the White House.
What are the other members of the Executive Branch?
- Vice President
- The Cabinet
What are the duties of the Vice President?
- To cast a vote in the event of a Senate deadlock
- To preside over and certify the official vote count of the U.S. Electoral College
- To take over the presidency in case of the president’s death or impeachment.
Who are some of the key members of the Cabinet?
- Secretaries of State, Treasury, War/Defense
- Attorney General
What is the Council of Economic Advisers?
An 18 member staff that assists the President with economic policy.
What is the National Security Council?
A council that advises the president on National Security matters. Usually comprised of members of the Cabinet (Secretaries of Defense and State) and the White House Staff (the National Security Adviser and White House Chief of Staff)
Who are the Joint Chiefs of Staff?
Top-ranking personnel from each of the main military branches who advise the president and other national security figures on military matters.
Who is the White House Chief of Staff?
Serves both as an adviser to the president and as a chief secretary, whose team is responsible for managing the president’s demanding schedule and helping forward the presidential agenda.
Who is the Press Secretary?
The president’s spokesperson to the media, a role which has become increasingly important and visible in today’s instant news environment.
What are enumerated powers?
The powers of the president that are enumerated in the Constitution.
