Settlers continued NW even tho Natives protested: Natives went to war so washington gave permission to A.Wayne to fight natives
Resulted in Natives losing (no aid from GB) and treaty of Greenville: Natives get 20,000 dollars and US gets more land west

John Adams

A

French did not like Jay’s treaty so seized US Ships so J.Adams sent diplomats to talk with minister.
Called the X,Y,and Z affair and led to war fever bc tried to get 10,000,000 dollars
Sent diplomats back negotiating peace: Napoleon Bonaparte agreed to stop seizing ships

John adams

A

Lots of Immigrants coming into the US and posed a threat to security.
The alien and sedition acts were passed which gave the Gov. power to deport and imprison immigrants. Later were repealed bc were wrong.
A.Acts: immigrants could only be US citizen for 5-14 years
S.Act: made it illegal to criticize Congress or Pres.

A

T.Jefferson and J.Madison wanted to get rid of the two laws. So Ken. and Vir. passed documents saying they violated the first amendment. Jefferson plated seed of session preventing further conflict.

goal: get rid of sedition and alien acts and whisky tax(?)
Domestic policy:Reduce federal budget, Gov. has less control in economy, smaller size of federal government, equal rights
Foreign Policy: France and England were at war and there was no neutrality effect. T.J stopped trade with F&E through embargo act which caused bad economy stance for USA

Farmers needed route to trade in Atlantic which Spn controlled, french ended up with it and sold it to america.
Caused commotion bc COnstitution didn’t say if a president could get more land so they created treaty to buy it
lewis and clark: map out territory, look 4 all water route to pacific (none), and trade w natives

A

british was interfering with us shipping and was still in US land causing people in congress to want war. people who opposed= NE merchants, and Federalist. 1218 Maddison got decleration for war wiping out federalist. Treaty of Ghent ended the war and gained US respect and increased manufacturing

was called era of good feeling bc there was on Political party, no threat from GB, and economic growth
had the adams onis treaty where they got more land from spain
had the missouri comp. which was when nation disagreed on if missouri could be free or slave. decided if one state joined as free another joined as slave and had the line of where they had to be slave or free
monroe doctrine:
nation felt threatened by sectionalism and other countries getting colonies back. sent warnings to other countries and they stopped colonizing and then promised US would stay out of european affairs
