Presentation 4.1 : Brain Structure Flashcards
What are the major parts of the human brain?
Cortex
Cerebellum
Limbic System
Brain Stem
What is the cortex?
layer of neurons that cover the outer part of the brain. Its folded which gives it the wrinkles
What is the cortex responsible for?
Higher order and abstract thinking
What is the frontal lobe?
associated with reasoning, planning, thinking, decision making, voluntary action and complex emotion
What is the Parietal lobe?
associated with movement, perception and recognition
What is the occipital lobe?
associated with visual
What is the temporal lobe?
associated with auditory, memory, and speech
What is the lobe responsible for reasoning, planning, thinking, decision making, voluntary action and complex emotion
Frontal Lobe
What is the lobe responsible for movement, perception and recognition
Parietal lobe
What is the lobe responsible for visual
occipital lobe
What is the lobe responsible for auditory, memory, and speech
temporal lobe
What divides the two hemispheres of the brain?
Corpus Callosum
What is the Corpus Callosum?
it divides the two hemispheres of the brain with neurons
What is the cerebellum?
a structure responsible for movement and balance?
What part is responsible for movement and balance?
cerebellum
Where is the cerebellum?
under the cortex
What shape is the cerebellum?
Similar to the cortex. Two hemispheres
What is the limbic system?
The older part of the brain that mainly controls emotion
Where is the limbic system?
Near the stem
What is the thalamus?
It is acts as a relay station for all sensory organs. Almost all nerves go to the thalamus
What is the hypothalamus?
It is responsible for creating emotions, thirst, hunger.
Where do all nerves go?
Thalamus
What is responsible for emotion, thirst, hunger?
hypothalamus
What does the amygdala do?
It is responsible for memory, emotion, and fear
What does the hippocampus do?
its responsible for learning, memory, converting short to long term memory, spatial orientation.
What is responsible for memory, emotion, and fear
amygdala
What is responsible for learning, memory, converting short to long term memory, spatial orientation.
hippocampus
What does the brain stem do?
controls our basic functions for life. breathing and heart beat
What controls our basic vital functions?
brain stem
