A

Molly: A better future. A better home. That’s what they promised us. Everything we could ever ask for. But…. I want to know if this city is truly the safe, clean, and perfect place that it claims to be for my family. So today I am meeting with the Mayor and Head Engineer of SanEco to find out is this city is right for me and my family.

Q

Annika: And I’m Annika, one of the many different engineers involved in the designing and construction of this magnificent city! Let’s take you on a tour! Welcome to SanEco.

A

Molly: Thank you both for meeting me! Wow, this place looks incredible! I heard this city is the new and improved San Francisco, after the original city was destroyed due to global warming and rising sea levels a hundred years ago.

Q

Violet: Yup, exactly. SanEco is full of resilient residents of many different abilities who have overcome a lot.

A

Molly: Back in my city I worked on trains and my coworker told me you use mooring systems to stay stable. One of these systems being a floating foundation that disperses water to hold the building’s weight.

Q

Violet: Natural disasters were also taken into account when building the city because of the earthquake zone we live in yet the fish and amazing weather in the area made the location worthwhile.

A

Molly: That’s a relief. Points to the RING poster is that the RING that I read about? The one that apparently disperses the waves around the city.

Q

Violet: Yes, it is! It also has glass walls that move up and down based on the height of the waves coming near the city. High impact cables and chains are attached to multiple points of both our RING and the underside of city pods.

A

Molly: And the cables run down to the ocean floor where you have installed earthquake proof cube structures to both mount the city to the seafloor, but also store clean water and energy until its use is required.

Q

Annika: Living seawalls were also attached around the ring and base structures, and they are made from self-healing concrete, preventing unwanted materials and different types of bacteria from growing, while also allowing marine life to thrive. It is one of the ways we give back to the environment after building SanEco.

A

Molly: And you use these man-made structures to act as a barrier to the waves? Now, I’m very excited about the breakwaters and jetties, Annika, can you tell me more about them?

Q

Violet: For environmental and cleanliness purposes our breakwaters include large scale garbage disposal units that go directly to our outreach trash and recycling system that reuses everything in our city from cans to clothing to ensure that the ocean surrounding us is clean.

A

Molly: Wow, that’s a good system. My daughter Daisy cares a lot about animals and sea life, so she’s looking forward to it. My other daughter Clarisa is excited to see if you have an entertainment center.

Q

Annika: On the topic of kids, you should know we have AI monitored school systems through virtual reality. We also have many hands-on labs to teach kids in person.

A

Molly: That’s wonderful. I’m excited for my child to attend now! WaitPoints to the train is that the infamous underwater train I’ve been hearing about? I heard It’s underwater and it hovers above an underwater track using superconductive magnets.

Q

Annika: Yes, indeed. We also have extra lanes in case of emergencies ensuring safety.

A

Molly: I knew this train was going to be amazing. It must’ve been hard to get a good water supply in this location. How did you manage?

Q

Violet: We have a huge desalination system that helps get freshwater. Although desalination was a risk, causing us to do an extended risk/benefit analysis, because of the huge cost. Yet we realized it was necessary because our citizens need clean drinking water. We were able cut down on the cost by selling the salt it produces to different countries.

A

Molly: That’s smart. I also read about this system you invented called OTEC? Which is Ocean Thermal Energy Conversion. My friend told me it helps solve water supply issues.

Q

Violet: Though when we initially started the design the surface wasn’t warm enough.

A

Molly: So, you used a hydrothermal vent that was discovered deep in the ocean.

Q

Annika: Correct. However, it released a large amount of carbon dioxide in the air.

A

Molly: and that’s why you moved them closer to the algae farms? Because algae counter carbon dioxide?

Q

Violet: Yup! When we were building it was a lot of trial and error, that’s why we used the engineering design process! Imagine, Plan, research, create, test and improve!

A

Molly: Wow I got to try that! OTEC seems like a cool way to produce energy! Wait! What is that? Are people hot air ballooning?

Q

Annika: Not quite! While hot air ballooning is a fun activity option that we offer in SanEco, what you are seeing up there is another way we produce our energy. They are essentially balloon wind turbines, although we call them FWT’s or Floating Wind Turbines.

A

Molly: Oh! In order for it to float, you would have had to use helium, correct? Like an actual balloon?

Q

Violet: Yeah! Unlike traditional wind turbines, the FWT’s are made out of a helium inflated shell that is tied to the ground using a specialized roping system.

A

Molly: Traditional wind turbines are supported by poles called “towers” but since the FWT’s are balloons, they are tied down by those wires going down into that building on the ground.

Q

Annika: Those wires don’t just hold down the balloon though, because they transfer the energy created by the turbine down to the holding building. As the wind turns the turbine, energy is created that will help SanEco thrive!

A

Molly: Well, you guys are just on top of your energy game. By the way, I heard your way of food production is through your innovative Stack Farms, right? The AI operated a multi-level food production facility with that four-story fishing center…IOFC.

17
Q

Violet: That’s right.

A

Molly: That’s good to hear. Since my family and I are planning to move here I would like to hear about the accessibility of your city.

18
Q

Violet: Well, SanEco is accessible to people of all abilities and has things for people to do of all interests from sports teams to book clubs San Eco has lots to offer.

A

Molly: One last important question: I had an amazing job in my previous so I’m curious about what jobs are offered here.

19
Q

Annika: Well, you’re in luck! We have many jobs in the work field, including medical professionals, engineers, architects, and so much more!

A

Molly: Sounds great! Thanks for meeting with me and giving me an insight into your city. This sounds like a safe and greatly engineered city to provide a great future for me and my kids.
