Presentation Flashcards
slide 1
Overconsumption of the environment is an increasing problem around the world
As the population grows and more resources are consumed more problems are presented
This unbalanced way of living causes rising dangers such as health issues and unavailability of resources as well as long-term impacts
slide 2
Earth’s future is in our hands
slide 3
Demand plays a role in overconsumption when the population grows, so do needs. This causes more factories to be produced and more to be made, but the long-term effects of products should be discussed more.
slide 4
- “One of those issues is overconsumption, especially of single-use products that damage the environment, slow the ability of the Earth to renew its resources, and contribute to climate change” Peluso states
- The more we use and discard the harder it is for these items to break down and for the Earth to replenish itself. Once National economies grow it can also be harder and a greater expense to change things for the better.
slide 5
Cody Peluso also states “Because fossil fuel technology is older and well-established, it tends to be cheaper than alternative sources.”
It can be harder to change our ways as a society because as demand grows the path we have carved in the past will be harder and harder to change.
slide 6
Although this has been stated countless times, the depth of overconsumption’s impact on the environment is often not fully understood. As previously mentioned, when the population increases, so does demand.
slide 7
Syal states “Shoes are made up of rubber, which many producers source from trees across Thailand, Indonesia, China, and West Africa.” and “One material often used in sneakers–a synthetic chemical composition called ethylene vinyl acetate–can persist for up to 1,000 years in landfills.”
This shows that shoes take a lot from plants and natural resources that can’t replenish as quickly. This waste continues to build up in landfills.
slide 8
Besides over-usage impacting the Earth, it also affects humans. With all the waste that ends up in dumps and the rising population, people end up living near the waste.
Richa Syal shares “ In the US, more than 1 million African Americans live within half a mile of oil and gas facilities, which emit toxic air pollutants. As a result, these communities often suffer from higher rates of cancer and asthma.”
This shows waste produced from great demand has effects on health. “Globally, fossil fuel pollution is responsible for one in five deaths” (Bertrand).
slide 9
Our daily habits, how we choose to live, and how we choose to take care of the Earth, matter. Even though overconsumption is a huge problem, there are small steps humanity can take to change everyday habits. To build a healthier world,
less single-use plastics is a good small step. Also being aware of where products purchased are from, and what resources were used to produce them, is another small step.
Being aware and caring is the very first and most crucial step to the overall development of many ecosystems within our Earth.
