Presentation Flashcards
There are some Pharmacologic methods
such as prescription medications like statins
- So statins interact with the HMG-CoA reductase which is the first enzyme in the cholesterol synthesis pathway. This enzyme is inhibited by statins which then reduces the amount of cholesterol the body makes
There are also insulin sensitizing agents such as
Metformin which restores insulin sensitivity
And lastly cholesterol absorption inhibitors like
Ezetimibe which interacts with the brush border on the microvilli of the small intestine. This prevents the intestines from absorbing cholesterol and plant sterols from the patients diet
You can also take supplements like
Omega 3 Fatty acids which helps to increase HDL and lower LDL
Fiber
which can help to prevent obesity and promote growth of beneficial bacteria in the intestines
And also antioxidants
which can alleviate oxidative stress by bindin and inactivating the oxidative molecules such as oxygen radicals
There are also some Non-pharmacologic interventions such as
managing your diet and weight.
Reducing your BMI can reduce the risks and effects of metabolic syndrome
- You can control your portion sizes
- You can also go on a mediterranean diet which consists omega 3 fatty acids and other unsaturated fats, natural antioxidants and fiber
- Lastly you can go on a hearty healthy, low fat diet
And
That is all we have for you today
