Verbal Transmission of Prescription Orders
may be received by pharmacist, tech, or intern
-Class II drugs cannot be given over phone except in emergencies and only for 72 hr supply
Electronic Transmission of Prescription Orders
-transmission system must be DEA compliant to receive C-II
-scheduled drugs must be signed electronically
Fax Transmission of Prescription Orders
-cannot receive C-II by Fax (except for hospice or LTC patients)
-fax machine must be located in pharmacy
-scheduled drugs must be signed
-fax should be copied or put in writing to prevent fading
Prescription Order Requirements
-Name and Address
-Date
-Drug name
-Qty
-Strength
-Sig directions
-Prescribers name
-Prescribers indication of # of refills
-Reminder legend
-Signature (unless oral or telephone)
C-II must have Dr DEA # and signature
Filling the Prescription Order
-preserved for 5 year min
-filed numerically
-techs cannot screen for allergies
Prescription Label Requirements (controlled)
-same requirements as non-controlled
+ Transfer Warning auxiliary label “Federal law prohibits the transfer of this drug to any person other than the on whom it was prescribed for”
Generic Substitution
Bioequivalence: Rate and extent of absorption of a test drug compared to the rate and extent of a reference drug
-May not substitute with a more expensive product
-must notify patient of generic
-can not substitute if provider indicates “Brand Medically Necessary”
Life of a prescription
-Non-controlled: # of refills or 1 year whichever is less
-Controlled: # of refills (5max) or 6 months whichever is less
-must be on file for 5 years
-NO refills on C-II
Emergency Practice Pharmacy
-cannot contact prescriber
-up to 72 hour supply: not C-II, essential drug
Return of Drugs Dispensed
-no refund
-prohibited except for: hospitals, LTC, repository program
-may only redispense once
