What is the Cardinal convention?
That the Monarch is to act on advice of the Government
How are prerogative powers secondary to parliamentary sovereignty?
Prerogative powers cannot be used to change the law, or to thwart Parliament’s intention, and if there is any conflict then the statute would take precedence
What prerogative powers are exercised by the Monarch?
Prorogation of Parliament, granting of Royal Assent, appointment of the PM, dismissal of the Government
What prerogative powers are exercised by the PM?
Deployment of armed forces (subject to consent from the House of Commons), matters of national security and intelligence, appointing and removing ministers, weekly meetings with the Monarch, maintaining relationships with devolved governments
