  1. “personal a” (DO referring to people) referring to people. ex. “Conozco a ella.”
  2. Before IO. ex. “Le doy esta receta a tu hermana.”
  3. With verb of MOTION to indicate direction or destination. ex. “Viajamos a la capital todos las lunes.”
  4. Indicate a point in time. ex. “Mi primera clase comienza a las ocho.”
  5. The manner/means in/by which something is done. ex. “hecho a mano.”
  6. Introduce prices and rates. ex. “Las sandías están a veinte centavos la libra.”
  7. “al” + infinitive. ex. “On/Upon/When ___…” (Al terminando el libro, ella empezó escribir un resumen. Al salir…)

  2. With verbs of motion to signal the point of departure. ex. “Salieron de Cuzco hace una semana.”

  4. Indicate posession, including a close association/relationship between objects. (noun + de + noun) ex. “La casa de Ofelia.”
  5. In phrases indicating authorship of a work (de NOT por!). ex. “Estoy leyendo un cuento de Cortázar.”
  6. Indicate the contents of a receptacle. ex. “Quiero un plato de sopa y un vaso de agua.”
  7. Compound words. In English we have compound words but in Spanish they put “de” in the middle. ex. “Classmates = Compañeros de clase”; “Coffee cup = taza de café”; “Spanish book = Libro de español”
  8. Link 2 nouns together to indicate the material something’s made of. ex. “Quiero comprarme una camisa de seda (silk).”; “Esta mesa es de roble (oak).”
  9. Introduce descriptive phrases (adj.’s)–calling attention to the distinctive characteristics of a person or object. ex. “El vestido de color rojo.”; El niño del pelo rubio.”

  7. Express a price rate or a rate/unit of measure. ex. “I read 3 books per month.”; “I write one essay per book.”; “I drive 70 miles per day.”
  8. Indicate the person(s)/object(s) INSTEAD OF, ON BEHALF OF, FOR THE SAKE OF, IN FAVOR OF that something is done. ex. “I worked for (in place of) Cody.”; “I voted for the governor.”; “Fight for your rights.”
  9. Indicate the object of an errand AFTER A VERB OF MOTION. ex. “Fui por arroz al supermercado.”; “Me mandaron a la fermacia por remedios.”; “Voy por gasolina.”
    Common motion verbs used with POR: Ir, Venir, Mandar, Regresar, Salir, Volver.
  10. Idiomatic Expressions. ex. “por supuesto”

Verb + Preposition + Noun Object when using the VERBS:

In Spanish these verbs don’t require a preposition afterwards UNLESS the direct object is a person.
ex:
“Miro la manifestación. (I’m looking AT the demonstration)”; “Miro a los manifestantes, quienes piden reformas. (I’m looking AT the demonstrators, who are asking FOR reforms)”; “Buscas a alguien? (Are you looking FOR someone?)” “Sí, busco a Teresa. (Yes, I’m looking FOR Teresa)”
