What are prepositions? What role do they serve? How are they often used?
Preposition are used with nouns to indicate location, direction, time or manner
They determine the case of the word that follows them
They are often used idiomatically for the language so most of them are not transferable
What are the five accusative prepositions? What do they NOT indicate?
Five important preposition
1. Fu*r = for
2. Ohne = without
3. Gegen = against
4. Durch = through, across
5. Um = around (place) at (time)
Distinctive => they are always followed by the accusative case
Not indicate => the word following the accusative case is not necessarily the direct object
What are the seven dative prepositions? What do they each mean?
They are all followed by the dative case/
Aus:
1. Out of => Richard kommt aus dem Haus
2. From (place) => Alexandra kommt aus Berlin
3. Made of (material) => Das Hemd ist aus Baumwolle
Bei
1. Near, next to => Die Backerai ist beim Markplatz
2. At => Prieswerte Jeans gibt es bei H&M
3. For, at (place of work) => Manfred arbeitet bei VW
4. At, with => Sibylle wohnt mit dem Bus
Mit
1. With => Thomas wohnt mit seiner Freudin
2. By (means of) => Wir fahren mit dem Bus

What are the four important contractions for the dative prepositions?
Bei dem => beim
Von dem => vom
Zu dem => zum
Zu der => zur
What are two way prepositions?
Prepositions which can take the accusative or the dative case
If active (placement), they take the accusative
If passive (location), they take the dative
What are the nine important two-way prepositions?
An => on, at (vertically)
Auf => on (horizontally)
In => in, into
Hinter => behind
Neben => next to
Uber => over, above
Unter => under, below
Vor => before, in front of
Zwischen => between
